Firewood season is upon us

I love being outside. However, as Kent correctly states, I have about a 3 degree comfort zone - somewhere in the 70 - 72 degree range.

Which is why we go through A LOT of firewood over the winter here in Idaho.

Being raised in a logging town on the Oregon Coast and having a Dad who spent several of my childhood years logging, there is something comforting and nostalgic about the smell of the woods. The dampness of the earth under a heavy canopy of trees, the wildlife no matter how big or small, and the sound of a chainsaw that always brings me back to what is real and right.

Harvesting and gathering - whether wood or another crop that sustains you and yours in some way - is one of the most satisfying things we can do. There is a sense of pride in knowing that whatever you are putting up will help sustain your family, and it's also fun to work alongside each other to accomplish something. My grandpa used to always say, "Firewood heats you 3 ways: when you cut it down, when you stack it and when you burn it."

I don't always get to go wood cutting with Kent, but tomorrow I do. I will be exhausted and a most likely a bit sore the next morning, but to spend a day working together outside where there are no distractions, and where technology has no reach, is by far one of the best ways for us to connect and catch up.

And for those few hours, all will be right in our world.
